What is a PingBack in WordPress?

Pingbacks in WordPress can be thought as remote comments. When your blog is ‘pingback’ enabled, you will get automatic notification about pingbacks. If you are managing Blog A and user on Blog B posts a comment linking to Blog A’s post, a pingback will be sent to Blog A. The origination of pingback will be confirmed. At the outset, a pingback will appear like a link to the Blog B’s post. Pingback excerpts are not displayed by default WordPress themes.

There is difference between pingbacks and trackbacks. Trackbacks are great targets for hacking. It is very difficult to fake a pingback. Pingbacks create a verifiable connection. Pingbacks and trackbacks are created in WordPress so that comments will be more authoritative. The blog commenting is verified by using pingbacks and trackbacks. You can enable trackbacks and pingbacks through the ‘Discussion Settings of Administration Panels’.

You can find the following under Default article settings:

Attempt to notify any blogs linked to from the article.

Allow link notifications from other blogs (pingbacks and trackbacks.)

After enabling trackbacks and pingbacks, you can find comments in the Administration Panel. They will also appear on the page as per the theme of the blog post.

Working of pingbacks

Pingbacks will perform operations automatically. By using pingbacks you can notice that the conversation is being rolled on a new site as well. If you create a new post, WordPress will ping all sites that are included in the post. It is possible to establish communication between two blogs, if the site accepts pings. The blog which receives pings will post a comment with a link to the site from where the ping is originated.

You should go through the complete details about the pinging process and it should be implemented in a cautious way. There will be certain websites which will not accept pings from other sites. For example, there are some news channels which will not entertain pingback function. Some websites might not be enabled with pingback facility. In such scenarios, the performance of the website will be slow as WordPress will try to attempt pings on a continuous basis. The time to post a new comment will take a long time.

Benefits of pingbacks and trackbacks

Pingbacks are created automatically and they will not send any data. Trackbacks are created manually and it will send an Excerpt of the content. There are self-pings which are found to be useful to some and they will be annoying for others.

When a post is created with a reference to your blog post on another site, pingback is created. When a new post is published, you will get an email notification. In this email notification, you will get an extract from the post they have written, a link to their post and a link to the post written by you.

When you click on the link to their post, it is possible to check out what they have written. You can also leave a comment on their site. It is possible to approve, delete or spam the pingback.
